my question: is the individual / tribe struggle different in Africa (and yes, I know Africa is culturally diverse…) than it is in the USA? what different cultural forces are at play?

Great picture!
The cult of the individual, the glorification of the individual, is a bad mistake.

vastly different. the US adolescent will often rebel against his ‘tribe’ as a rite of passage. here your chances of survival are greatly, greatly diminished if you act outside of your culture, any unwillingness to conform is seen as subversive.

thanks. i think there is a need for balance. individuals need the group, we are built for community, but sometimes we need to escape the group we were placed in and find another.
