my question: is the individual / tribe struggle different in Africa (and yes, I know Africa is culturally diverse…) than it is in the USA? what different cultural forces are at play?
vastly different. the US adolescent will often rebel against his ‘tribe’ as a rite of passage. here your chances of survival are greatly, greatly diminished if you act outside of your culture, any unwillingness to conform is seen as subversive.
thanks. i think there is a need for balance. individuals need the group, we are built for community, but sometimes we need to escape the group we were placed in and find another.
